  • Argentina captain Lionel Messi has once again made history on the World Cup stage. With his goal against Jordan, he broke the 56-year-old record of scoring in seven consecutive World Cup matches, breaking Brazil legend Jairzinho’s 56-year-old record.

Earlier, in the 1970 World Cup, Jairzinho set a record by scoring in six consecutive matches from the group stage to the final. That record remained intact for more than five decades.

Messi’s historic journey began at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He scored consecutive goals against Australia, the Netherlands, Croatia and France in the knockout stages of that tournament. He then scored against Algeria and Austria in the 2026 World Cup, equaling the record of Jorginho and French legend Just Fontaine for scoring in six consecutive matches.

Finally, the Argentine superstar became the sole owner of history by scoring against Jordan, setting a new World Cup record for goals in seven consecutive matches.

In World Cup history, Just Fontaine scored 13 goals in six consecutive matches in the same tournament. On the other hand, Jairzinho and Messi have achieved this feat of scoring in consecutive matches in two different World Cups. However, the record of scoring in seven consecutive matches is currently held only by Lionel Messi.

With this new milestone, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner further enriched his legendary status in World Cup history.
