The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has sentenced three accused, including former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, to death in a case of crimes against humanity filed in the shooting and killing of two people while hanging from the corniche in Rampura, Dhaka, during the July uprising.
A three-member tribunal headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder announced the verdict on Sunday (June 28). The other two convicted accused are former Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Khilgaon Zone Md. Rashedul Islam and former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rampura Police Station Md. Mashiur Rahman. All of them are absconding.
The tribunal also sentenced former Rampura Police Station SI Tariqul Islam Bhuiyan to life imprisonment and arrested former ASI Chanchal Chandra Sarkar to 20 years in prison.
This is the third verdict in the crimes against humanity cases centered on the July uprising. The prosecution demanded the maximum punishment for the five accused, but Chanchal Chandra Sarkar’s lawyer claimed in court that the charges against his client were not proven.
After completing the investigation of the case, the prosecution filed a formal charge sheet on August 7, 2025. On September 18 of the same year, the tribunal framed charges against the five accused and ordered the trial to begin. Later, after presenting new digital evidence and taking re-testimony, the case was scheduled for verdict.
According to the case details, Amir Hossain was shot while hanging from the cornice of an under-construction building to escape police pursuit during a clash in Rampura on July 19, 2024. Nadeem and Maya Islam were killed in police firing in the same incident.
