Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sought the support of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
He made the call during a courtesy call on the ambassadors and high commissioners of the OIC countries in Dhaka at the prime minister’s secretariat on Tuesday.
Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Zahidul Islam Rony said the representatives of the OIC member countries congratulated Tarique Rahman on assuming the role of prime minister and expressed his desire to further strengthen relations with Bangladesh.
They assured to increase cooperation in various sectors including investment, trade, education, health, textile and pharmaceutical industries. He also reiterated his commitment to support Bangladesh.
The prime minister welcomed their speech and expressed her gratitude on behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh. He recalled Bangladesh’s brotherly relations with the OIC countries since the time of the martyred President Ziaur Rahman and hoped to strengthen it in the future.
During the meeting, the prime minister particularly highlighted the Rohingya crisis and sought the cooperation of the OIC countries to play an effective role in the international arena.
Ambassadors and high commissioners of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Palestine, Algeria, Brunei, Egypt, Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar and UAE Arab Emirates were present during the meeting.
The prime minister’s foreign affairs adviser Humayun Kabir, foreign affairs adviser M Farhadul Islam and prime minister’s additional press secretary Atiqur Rahman Ruman were also present at the meeting.
