‘Upise’ begins in Islami Bank: Jamaat-e-Islami

  • There has been a new political debate surrounding the banking sector in the country, especially the recent administrative changes in Islami Bank.

    Leader of the opposition and Jamaat-e-Islami’s Amir Shafiqur Rahman alleged that “renew interference” has begun inside the bank, which could pose a risk to the economy.

    Speaking at a seminar at the auditorium of in the capital, he said the normal activities of the bank may be unstable due to the incident of sending the managing director of Islami Bank on compulsory leave.

    Shafiqur Rahman warned that if political influence is exerted in the banking sector, it will destroy public confidence. “People will react hard if they try to establish party control over the banks.”

    He also claimed that the overall economic balance could be damaged if the stability of a financial institution, making a significant contribution to the country’s economy. Referring to the role of Islami Bank in accumulating remittances in particular, he termed it as a ‘strategic institution’.

    Urging the government, he said it is important to ensure that the banking sector is operating on a transparent and professional basis. Otherwise, he feared that political instability could also be reflected in the economic sector.
