The International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday announced its verdict in the murder of Abu Sayeed, a student at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur. The tribunal sentenced two policemen to death for the murder of the first martyr of the July uprising. The other 28 defendants were sentenced to varying terms of imprisonment.
A three-member panel led by Tribunal-2 Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury announced the verdict.
The death row convicts are former Rangpur Metropolitan Police ASI Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy.
The three who were sentenced to life imprisonment are former Assistant Police Commissioner (Kotwali Zone) Arifuzzaman alias Jibon, former officer-in-charge of Tajhat Police Station Rabiul Islam alias Nayan, and former camp in-charge of Begum Rokeya University Bibhuti Bhushan Roy alias Madhav.
According to the tribunal sources, during the verdict, the judicial panel presented evidence of the allegations of murder, torture and human rights violations and determined the sentences in light of the defendants’ responsibilities. Considering the case, this verdict is considered an important precedent in the field of international human rights and law and order.
