The government has decided to appoint one ‘tag officer’ at every petrol pump to increase transparency and accountability in the country’s energy sector. The aim of this initiative is to ensure coordination in supply, sales and management and strengthen supervision to prevent irregularities.
The decision was taken at a virtual meeting held on March 27, according to a notification issued by the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources on Saturday. Secretary of the division Mohammad Saiful Islam presided over the meeting.
According to the decision, Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation will appoint tag officers for petrol pumps in Dhaka and Chittagong metropolitan areas. On the other hand, the concerned deputy commissioners will perform this duty in the district and divisional cities outside the metropolis, and the upazila nirbahi officials will be appointed at the upazila level.
The appointed officials will monitor the daily activities following the prescribed policies and submit regular reports to the concerned department. The government has directed to complete the recruitment process and inform the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources within a short time.
According to policymakers, the move will play an important role in keeping the energy supply system effective and regulated in the wake of the ongoing global turmoil.
