Khamenei’s son elected as Iran’s new supreme leader

    • Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been elected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Iran International reported on Wednesday .

    The newspaper quoted sources as saying that Iran’s influential religious council, the Assembly of Experts , elected Mojtaba Khamenei as supreme leader under pressure from the Revolutionary Guards. Analysts believe the decision marks a significant and controversial turning point within Iran’s power structure.

    Meanwhile, Iranian media outlet Fars reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei , who was killed in a US and Israeli attack, will be buried in Mashhad. Mashhad is a holy city for Iranians; it is where Khamenei was born and where his father is buried at the Imam Reza Shrine .

    The report also said that Khamenei was killed in a joint Israeli-US attack on February 28. Iranian media reported the deaths of several other members of his family in the attack. In addition, Khamenei’s wife Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, who was injured in the attack, died two days later, NDTV reported, citing Iranian sources.
