Police have detained Belal Uddin, the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami in Thakurgaon district, along with around Tk 50 lakh in cash at Nilphamari’s Saidpur Airport while he was en route to Thakurgaon by air from Dhaka. He was detained at the airport’s immigration checkpost on Wednesday afternoon.
Nilphamari Police Superintendent Sheikh Zahidul Islam said that in a special operation conducted based on a secret tip-off, Belal Uddin’s bag was searched after a Novoair flight from Dhaka landed. A large amount of cash was recovered from there.
According to the police, the initial amount of money recovered is estimated to be around Tk 5 million. The exact amount of money is being counted and the detained person is being interrogated to find out the source of the money and the purpose of carrying it.
