US Ambassador to Dhaka Brent Christensen has said that the United States will not take sides in Bangladesh’s national elections and that Washington will work with the government that the people elect through voting.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Building in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Wednesday. The ambassador said the United States is eagerly awaiting the February 12 elections and is keen to see the results.
He said that the people of Bangladesh have the sole right to determine the outcome of the election. The United States does not take sides with any political party or candidate.
The ambassador also said that in a recent meeting with the Chief Advisor, he heard about the hope for a peaceful and festive election and he himself hopes for a free and joyful vote.
Brent Christensen expressed satisfaction with the information provided by the Chief Election Commissioner regarding the Election Commission’s preparations at the meeting. The meeting was also attended by the EC’s senior secretary and officials from the US embassy.
