Bangladesh’s name has been re-introduced into the discussion amid uncertainty surrounding the upcoming T20 World Cup. Last week, Bangladesh was dropped from the tournament after refusing to play in India due to security concerns, and the ICC included Scotland in their place.
However, recent circumstances indicate that that decision is being reconsidered.
The Indian media Hindustan Times reported that if Pakistan decides to withdraw from the World Cup, the ICC is considering replacing them with Bangladesh. The report quoted an ICC official as saying that in that case, Bangladesh could be included in Group ‘A’ and, as per the BCB’s proposal, the team could play all its matches in Sri Lanka – which would be relatively easier in terms of security and logistical management.
Due to this possibility, the Bangladesh Cricket Board is now looking at Pakistan’s position. BCB sources said that the situation is being closely monitored and if necessary, their position will be reviewed.
On the other hand, the decision is also risky for Pakistan. The ICC has already indicated that if it decides to boycott the World Cup, it risks being excluded not only from this tournament but also from future Asia Cups.
Overall, Bangladesh’s World Cup fate is not yet fully determined amid diplomatic and sports policy tensions ahead of the T20 World Cup.
