According to multiple US officials, President Donald Trump has been briefed on various plans for an attack on Iran. However, he has not yet made a final decision.
Officials said the options presented to Trump included targeting Iranian security forces and some civilian facilities. The White House did not comment directly on the issue, referring only to Trump’s recent statements and warnings on social media.
The protests in Iran, which began over an economic crisis, have already turned into demands for the government to fall. According to human rights groups, many protesters have been killed by security forces. However, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that the government will not back down under any circumstances.
In this situation, Trump warned that the United States would respond harshly if Iran continued to repress its people as it has in the past, although he did not indicate sending ground troops.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The discussion covered the situation in Iran, Syria and Gaza. The US is publicly expressing support for the Iranian protesters.
But senior US officials have warned that any military action could backfire, either by uniting the Iranian people behind the government or increasing the risk of retaliatory attacks on US bases and diplomats in the Middle East.
It is worth noting that just six months ago, the United States launched a major attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities through ‘Operation Midnight Hammer’. In his second term, Trump has already ordered air and missile strikes on various countries, including Iran, Venezuela, Syria and Yemen.
