Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has issued a stern warning to US President Donald Trump in the wake of the US military operation in Venezuela and the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro. In a regular press conference on Tuesday (January 6), she reiterated Mexico’s firm position against any kind of foreign intervention in Latin America.
Sheinbaum said that opposition to interference in the internal affairs of other countries is a cornerstone of Mexico’s foreign policy, which is based on the Constitution and the UN Charter. He said that Latin American history proves that foreign intervention has never brought democracy or long-term stability.
Earlier, on Saturday, Trump ordered an airstrike on the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, killing at least 80 people. After the attack, Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife were arrested and taken to the United States.
Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente strongly criticized the incident, questioning the Trump administration and the UN’s passive role in preventing violations of international law.
After the Venezuela issue, Trump hinted at intervention targeting Mexico and Colombia, but Sheinbaum flatly rejected it. He made it clear that no foreign military presence would be accepted in the face of Mexico’s sovereignty.
