The Bangladesh government has summoned India’s High Commissioner in Dhaka, Pranay Verma, amid concerns over the security of Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions in New Delhi and various cities in India.
Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam summoned him to the Foreign Ministry at 10 am on Tuesday (December 22). Diplomatic sources said that a formal request was made to strengthen the security of Bangladesh missions located in Indian territory following the recent protests and threats.
This is the second time in the last 10 days that Prannoy Verma has been summoned. The Indian High Commissioner has been summoned at least six times so far on various issues during the interim government.
Earlier, in a December 14 summons, Dhaka called for cooperation, arrest and extradition if necessary, to prevent those involved in the attack on Inqilab Manch leader Sharif Osman Hadi from fleeing to India. Concern was also expressed over the statement of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is in New Delhi.
In response, India summoned the Bangladesh High Commissioner in New Delhi on December 17. The latest protest in front of the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi on Saturday night has led to renewed tensions in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
According to analysts, Dhaka-Delhi relations are now at a sensitive stage in the context of the announcement of protests in front of the Bangladesh missions in Delhi and Mumbai.
