The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has formally launched an investigation into allegations of misuse of state funds against former President Abdul Hamid. The allegations state that around Tk 240 million was spent from government funds in the name of implementing a ‘beautification project’ around his private residence in Nikunja-1 area of the capital.
On Sunday, ACC Director General (Prevention) Md. Akhter Hossain told reporters that the investigation has begun after verifying the objectivity of the complaint; the identity or position of the person is not considered. The main focus of the investigation is now to determine whether unusual expenses were incurred in constructing aesthetic decks, suspension bridges, road blocks and special lampposts in the area adjacent to Hamid’s three-storey duplex house on Lake Drive Road in Nikunja.
Hamid moved into the house after leaving office as president in April 2023. The matter has sparked widespread public debate since the allegations surfaced. The ACC said further legal action will be taken if necessary after the investigation.
