Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made history by getting married while in office. The 62-year-old leader married his longtime partner, Jody Haydon, 16 years his junior, on Saturday in the green grounds of The Lodge, his government residence in the capital Canberra. The ceremony was attended only by two family members and a few close friends – a rare event in the country’s political history.
Albanese proposed to Haydon on Valentine’s Day last year, but the wedding date was kept a closely guarded secret. The bride’s parents took to the stage to hold her hand, and their dog Toto carried the newlyweds’ rings, drawing special attention from guests.
Albanese and Hayden left the wedding venue to the tune of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours.” In a joint statement, they said they were “delighted to share our love in the presence of our closest family.”
The newlyweds will go on a short honeymoon within Australia next week.
