The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has recovered a total of 9 kg 707 grams (832 bhori) of gold ornaments after opening three lockers in two banks belonging to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed. The search was conducted as part of a re-verification of her assets.
At a regular briefing at the ACC office on Wednesday, ACC Director General Md. Akhter Hossain said that the lockers of Pubali Bank and Agrani Bank were opened on the court’s orders. Judicial magistrates, gold experts from Bangladesh Bank, NBR officials and members of intelligence agencies were present.
Only an empty jute bag was found in one locker at Purnali Bank. About 9.7 kg of gold ornaments , including various ornaments and a gold boat,
were recovered from two other lockers—one in the name of Sheikh Hasina and Saima Wazed Putul and the other in the name of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana .
ACC said that based on the description and notes of the locker, it is believed that the gold may belong to Sheikh Hasina and her family members (Rehana Siddiqui, Saima Wazed Putul, Sajeeb Wazed Joy and Bobby). After preparing the initial list, the gold has been placed in the custody of the relevant bank branches.
The organization said that necessary measures will be taken after determining the ownership of the gold, its actual valuation, and legal responsibilities .
