A 5.7-magnitude earthquake jolted Dhaka and several other districts across the country, with its epicenter in Madhabdi, Narsingdi. The quake, felt at 10:38 a.m. on Friday (21 November), left at least seven people dead nationwide.
In Dhaka’s Old City area of Bangshal, three pedestrians were killed when a railing collapsed during the tremors. Two more deaths were reported in Narayanganj and two in Narsingdi. More than fifty people were injured, and widespread panic followed.
3 Deaths in Dhaka
Three people, including a child, died in Old Dhaka’s Bangshal area when the railing of a five-story building collapsed.
The incident was confirmed by Malik Ahsan Uddin, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Lalbagh Division.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released.
2 Deaths in Narayanganj
In Rupganj upazila, a woman died after a wall collapsed during the quake, injuring her daughter.
In another incident in the same area, Fatema, a one-year-old child, died when a tin-shed house wall collapsed.
Her mother, Kulsum Begum, and neighbor Jesmin Begum were injured.
Several others in the district were also reported injured.
2 Deaths in Narsingdi
In Gabtoli area of Sadar upazila, a 10-year-old boy named Omar died when a house canopy collapsed. His father, Delwar Hossain Uzzal, was critically injured.
In another incident in Palash upazila’s Malita village, a 75-year-old man named Kazem Ali died after being crushed by a collapsing mud wall.
At least 55 people were injured across Narsingdi, including three who were struck by a falling roof railing.
