Two crude bombs detonated Sunday night outside the Central Road residence of Syeda Rizwana Hasan, an adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and the Ministry of Water Resources. The explosions occurred around 9 p.m., causing no injuries.
Hasan confirmed the incident, saying the assailants fled immediately after the blasts. According to eyewitnesses, two individuals approached on foot, hurled the crude bombs in front of the house, and quickly escaped. Police arrived at the scene and have begun an investigation.
About an hour and a half earlier, two crude bombs also exploded near the Saarc Fountain intersection in Karwan Bazar. No casualties were reported there either.
The city has been on edge ahead of Monday’s scheduled verdict by the International Crimes Tribunal in a war crimes case linked to the July mass uprising, involving ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In the past week, arson attacks on buses and trains, as well as crude bomb explosions, have intensified following the Awami League’s call for a “lockdown” protest despite a ban on its political activities.
Between Saturday night and Sunday morning, several vehicles in Dhaka were set on fire or hit with crude bombs. Police say they have arrested at least 18 Awami League activists in connection with the incidents.
