BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that if the party returns to power through public mandate, it will prioritise curbing what he described as India’s “overbearing influence” on Bangladesh.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday after inspecting the rubber dam built on the Mahananda River in Chapainawabganj, Fakhrul accused the previous government and India’s current leadership of maintaining an “imbalanced relationship,” where Bangladesh “received almost nothing in return.”
He noted that India had supported Bangladesh during the 1971 Liberation War, and said this should have encouraged New Delhi to take a more cooperative stance.
Fakhrul said a future BNP government would place top priority on issues such as border killings, fair water-sharing, and trade imbalance—calling these “core political commitments.”
Criticising the Awami League government, he argued that bilateral relations should be based on “equal footing and mutual respect,” not flattery.
