Following the announcement that the national election and referendum will be held on the same day, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has convened an emergency meeting of its highest policymaking body, the National Standing Committee.
The meeting began on Thursday (November 13) after 7 p.m. at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, according to Shayrul Kabir Khan, a member of the party’s media cell.
BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman joined the important meeting virtually from London and is presiding over the session.
Although the specific agenda has not been officially disclosed, it is widely believed that the meeting was called in response to Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s national address, in which he announced that the national election and the referendum on the July Charter would be held on the same day.
It is worth noting that the BNP had long been demanding that the national election and the referendum be conducted simultaneously.
