BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the interim government is itself creating a situation in which the national election may be disrupted. He made this remark on Friday afternoon while speaking at a brief rally in front of the BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan, organized on the occasion of the historic National Revolution and Solidarity Day on November 7.
The rally started from Naya Paltan around 4 pm and proceeded through Kakrail, Malibagh and Banglamotor, ending in front of the Sonargaon Hotel. An improvised stage was set up in front of the central office for the rally.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “It is unfortunate that the interim government, which we completely supported, is now creating a situation where the election may be hindered. Some political parties are calling for a referendum to sabotage the election. We want to state clearly: if there is a referendum, it must be held on the same day as the election.”
He further said, “One political party has now formed an alliance to exert pressure for holding the referendum before the election. Why before the election? We are not against the referendum, but it must be held on election day, because holding voting twice will cost a huge amount of money.”
BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas and Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, and Dhaka North BNP convenor Aminul Haque also spoke at the event. The rally was conducted by the party’s publicity secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku.
