Nasa Group Chairman Nazrul Islam Majumder was made to stand in the dock during a court hearing on Wednesday, where he requested a stool due to illness, but the plea was not granted. He remained standing, resting his hands on his waist, as the hearing proceeded in the courtroom of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman.
Earlier, on October 26, Sub-Inspector Jewel Rana of Jatrabari Police Station had applied to show Nazrul arrested in the case filed over the killing of Abu Bakr Rifat during the July uprising. The court set Wednesday for the hearing. When Nazrul was brought to court, he was wearing handcuffs, a helmet, and a bulletproof vest, which were later removed before placing him in the dock.
During the hearing, Nazrul’s lawyer, Morshed Hossain Shahin, argued that there was no justification for showing him arrested in this case and that the investigation officer had not submitted any evidence linking him to the incident. He said that arresting him in this case would deny him justice.
After hearing both sides, the court ordered that Nazrul be shown arrested in the case and sent to jail.
According to the case details, Abu Bakr Rifat participated in the protests that led to the fall of the Awami League government on August 5. He was shot in Jatrabari that afternoon and later died in hospital. His father, Awlad Hossain, filed a murder case at Jatrabari Police Station on January 28.
Nazrul Islam Majumder was initially arrested from Dhaka’s Gulshan on October 2 last year and has since been shown arrested in multiple cases and interrogated in custody.
