Since the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, around 550,000 Syrian refugees who had been living in Turkey have returned to their homeland, according to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. He shared this information while speaking to journalists in Istanbul on Saturday (November 1).
The minister said that currently, about 2.4 million Syrian refugees remain in Turkey, down from more than 3.5 million at its peak.
Meanwhile, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported that since the fall of Assad’s government on December 8, 2024, a total of 1.16 million Syrians have returned to the country, and about 1.9 million internally displaced people have also been able to go back to their homes.
According to UN data, there are still over 7 million internally displaced Syrians and more than 4.5 million refugees living abroad.
