The High Court on Monday (October 30) issued a rule regarding the death of a young man after a metro rail bearing pad came loose in Farmgate, Dhaka. The court has sought to know why the victim, Abul Kalam’s family, should not be awarded Tk 20 million in compensation.
Simultaneously, the court ordered the formation of an expert committee to investigate the quality of bearing pads used in metro rail and all flyovers, as well as overall safety measures, and submit a report within 30 days.
The order was passed by a bench comprising Justices Fahmida Kader and Asif Hasan. The hearing on the petition was conducted by Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun and Advocate Tanvir Ahmed.
The accident occurred on October 26 at 12:30 pm, when the bearing pad fell, killing Abul Kalam, a resident of Ishorpati village in Naria upazila, Shariatpur.
The petition requested that the quality of all bearing pads used in metro rail and flyovers be examined, and that responsible authorities be held accountable for the accident.
The High Court’s rule is being seen as an important step toward re-evaluating metro rail safety measures and the accountability of the responsible authorities.
