BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has reiterated the party’s firm stance that the proposed referendum must be held on the same day as the national election.
“BNP’s position on the referendum is absolutely clear — it must take place on the day of the national election. There is no room for negotiation on this matter,” he said.
He made the remarks on Tuesday afternoon while speaking to journalists after a courtesy meeting with British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cook at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka. The meeting was also attended by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other senior leaders.
Amir Khosru further stated that no free and fair election is possible in the country without a caretaker government. “To make the Election Commission truly effective, there is no alternative to a caretaker government,” he added.
Regarding BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s return to the country, Amir Khosru said, “It is quite clear that he will return to Bangladesh very soon.”
