Now, Messi himself has addressed the speculation—expressing his desire to play for Argentina in the 2026 World Cup, though he emphasized that it will depend entirely on his physical fitness.
In an interview with NBC News, the Argentine superstar said:
“Playing in a World Cup is always something special. I want to be there, and if I am, I want to contribute to the team’s success.”
He added:
“When Inter Miami’s preparations for the next season begin, I’ll evaluate my physical condition every day. If I feel fit, I definitely want to play. We won the last World Cup, and having the chance to defend that title would be amazing.”
Messi had made similar remarks earlier, saying that his decision would depend on how his body feels.
“When your body doesn’t respond, you can’t enjoy football. I always try to be honest with myself—if I feel good, I’ll play; if not, I won’t.”
Despite his age, Messi’s on-field performance remains stellar. In the current MLS season, he has scored 29 goals in 28 matches, earning his first Golden Boot and becoming a finalist for the MVP (Most Valuable Player) award. If he wins, he will be the first player to claim MVP in two consecutive seasons.
For now, Messi’s focus is on club success. His team, Inter Miami, is competing in a three-match series against Nashville to secure a spot in the MLS Cup semifinals. Miami won the first leg 3–1, and a victory in the second leg on November 2 will confirm their place in the last four.
