At least 38 people have been killed in a devastating fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria’s southern Ezza village. The tragic incident occurred on the Kacha-Agai road on Wednesday (October 22), according to local authorities.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fuel-laden tanker overturned on a damaged section of the road, spilling its contents. Moments later, as nearby residents rushed to collect the leaking fuel, the tanker exploded, killing 38 people instantly in the ensuing inferno.
Farouk Mohammed Kao, chairman of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association in Niger State, said most of the victims were collecting fuel from the overturned tanker before it exploded.
Hajia Aishatu Sadu, commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State, said rescue and recovery operations are still underway. The accident has caused severe traffic congestion on the busy highway, particularly due to the poor condition of the road, which is also hampering relief efforts.
