Following the devastating fire at a chemical warehouse in Mirpur’s Rupnagar area of Dhaka, Fire Service Assistant Director Kazi Nazmuzzaman said that it would only be possible to confirm whether any more bodies remain inside once the fire is completely extinguished.
Speaking at a press briefing in front of the burned chemical warehouse on Wednesday (October 15), he stated,
“Our firefighting operations are still ongoing. It will take more time to remove the chemicals and fully douse the flames.”
He explained that while the garment section’s fire has been brought under control, extinguishing the chemical fire has proven difficult. The burning chemicals are producing toxic chlorine gas, which is causing breathing problems and hampering the firefighters’ operations.
Nazmuzzaman added,
“The area’s dense population is making it harder to carry out our work. We are using loudspeakers to urge residents to stay at a safe distance.”
In response to a question, he said,
“So far, we have confirmed that no new bodies have been found inside. However, since the warehouse is still filled with smoke, we can only be certain once the firefighting operation is fully completed.”
Meanwhile, multiple fire service units continue to work relentlessly at the scene, while law enforcement agencies remain on alert to keep the situation under control.
