Teachers demanding an increase in house rent and medical allowances continued their sit-in in front of the High Court even after evening on Tuesday (October 14). They announced that if their demands are not met by 11 a.m. on Wednesday (October 15), they will move their demonstration to Shahbagh.
Teacher leaders also warned that if the demands remain unfulfilled even after that, they will go on a hunger strike unto death.
As per their earlier program, the teachers began a “March to Secretariat” from the Central Shaheed Minar on Tuesday afternoon. However, when they reached near the High Court, police stopped them by setting up barricades. The teachers then sat on the road and began their sit-in protest there.
During the protest, Delwar Hossain Azizi, member secretary of the Nationalization-Seeking Alliance of MPO-listed Teachers, said:
“We will stay here tonight. If our demands are not met by 11 a.m. tomorrow, we will move to Shahbagh. If still ignored, we will march to the Jamuna, and ultimately go on a hunger strike unto death.”
He added:
“There is no turning back for us now. The movement has reached its final stage. The government must accept our demands — there’s no alternative. We will continue surrounding the Secretariat until our demands are fulfilled.”
Meanwhile, police remained deployed around the area as teachers continued their peaceful sit-in, holding placards and chanting slogans throughout the evening.
