National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain has demanded that members of the army, RAB, police, BGB, and intelligence agencies involved in enforced disappearances, killings, and crimes against humanity during the Awami League regime be brought to justice.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday afternoon at Shaheed Abu Sayeed Square in front of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, he said,
“Some generals became involved in abductions and killings to gain Sheikh Hasina’s favor. These generals have not only destroyed democracy in Bangladesh but also tarnished the dignity of the armed forces.”
He further stated,
“Without the involvement of members of the forces in abductions and killings, Sheikh Hasina could never have become a fascist leader. To make the army and law enforcement truly institutions of the people, it is essential to hold the perpetrators accountable.”
Referring to the July Movement, Akhtar Hossain said,
“We salute those who stood with students and the people during the July Movement. Those who opposed the people must be arrested and brought to trial immediately.”
Earlier in the morning, the NCP leader arrived in Rangpur by air via Saidpur from Dhaka. He later visited the grave of late Rangpur District BNP Member Secretary Anisur Rahman Laku, met with his family, and attended a reception at Begum Rokeya University organized by local party leaders and activists.
On the issue of parliamentary elections and political alliances, Akhtar said,
“The NCP has not yet initiated any alliance talks, but we are open to coalition politics if it serves the national interest. Our politics is centered on the needs of the people.”
He added,
“Justice and necessary reforms must be completed before the national election — that is the aspiration of the July Movement. The NCP will take part in the signing ceremony of the July Charter.
