After two years of devastating conflict, a ceasefire has finally taken effect in the Gaza Strip. Following the announcement by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), displaced Palestinians have begun returning to Gaza City in large numbers.
According to the agreement, Israeli forces are gradually withdrawing to designated boundary lines, and residents have been allowed to return to the northern region. IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee said that Palestinians are being permitted to travel north using the main southern highway in Gaza. However, some areas remain “extremely dangerous,” and civilians have been advised to avoid those zones.
Local sources in Gaza reported that Israeli troops have already withdrawn from the northwestern outskirts of Gaza City toward the east. Israeli media have also confirmed that the IDF has started pulling back from several areas.
The ceasefire is part of U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed three-phase peace plan, which includes a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. However, more than half of the enclave still remains under Israeli military control.
Under the terms of the agreement, both sides are required to release prisoners and hostages within 72 hours of the ceasefire taking effect. According to BBC reports, Hamas is expected to release 20 surviving hostages by 12 p.m. local time on Monday.
Analysts view the ceasefire as a significant step toward restoring peace in Gaza, though they warn that the situation remains fragile and uncertain.
