Bangladesh Police’s biggest challenge ahead of the upcoming national election will be confronting defeated, fugitive, and rogue fascist forces. Their leaders and supporters also pose a significant threat to law and order, said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam.
He made the remarks at a press conference held at the Police Headquarters on Tuesday (30 September). The IGP noted that restoring law and order within a year after police stations were vacated in August 2024 was a major challenge. Now, the primary goal is to ensure the capability to conduct a free and fair election.
Regarding police limitations in controlling gangs and criminal elements in areas like Mohammadpur, the IGP said, “There is no doubt about our capability. With the assistance of the army and civil administration, we are maintaining law and order. Preventive detention measures may also be applied if necessary.”
On the issue of looted weapons, he mentioned that 1,350 firearms have yet to be recovered. These may have fallen into the hands of separatists or criminals, he said, but preparations are underway to maintain security.
For the upcoming election, 150,000 police personnel will be deployed. The IGP highlighted that, for the first time, such a large number of police officers are being trained using advanced audio-visual techniques, with the training modules developed in coordination with the Election Commission.
He emphasized, “Based on professionalism, neutrality, and competence, we will fulfill our election duties. Bangladesh Police are fully prepared to face any challenges.”
