A low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low. As a result, rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms is expected to increase across the country over the next five days, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
In its forecast released on Friday (September 26), BMD said the system, located over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal near the Odisha–Andhra coast, may further intensify. Under its influence, all divisions including Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet are likely to experience rainfall, with moderate to heavy showers in some places.
Meteorologists noted that the monsoon trough currently extends from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha, passing through the center of the low, across southern Bangladesh, up to Assam. While monsoon activity remains weak over Bangladesh, it is moderate to strong over the north Bay of Bengal.
Light to moderate rain with temporary gusty winds is forecast for parts of Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, as well as scattered areas in Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Mymensingh. Rainfall may increase in intensity from Saturday, especially in Mymensingh and coastal regions.
On Sunday and Monday, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions are expected to see heavier rainfall, with thunderstorms possible in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, and Barishal. By Tuesday, rainfall will persist but may ease slightly, with a small rise in day and night temperatures.
The extended outlook suggests an overall increase in rainfall across the country, with heavy showers in the southern regions and strong squally winds along coastal areas.
