The first batch of Hilsa exported from Bangladesh has arrived in Indian markets on Thursday (September 18). In Kolkata, the fish sold out within hours of arrival.
According to Indian media reports, in popular markets like Maniktala and Lake Market, Hilsa weighing around 1 kg sold for ₹2,000 per kg, while larger Hilsa over 1.5 kg fetched ₹2,500 per kg. Despite the high prices, buyers rushed to purchase the seasonal delicacy ahead of Durga Puja.
In wholesale markets in Howrah, limited initial supply kept prices between ₹1,500 and ₹2,000 per kg. Many retail buyers returned disappointed due to size and cost, but prices are expected to drop as supply increases.
The first batch of 37 tons of Hilsa entered India through Benapole port, and an additional 1,192 kg entered via the Akhaura land port. The government has approved a total of 1,200 tons for export ahead of Durga Puja, at an export price of $12.50 per kg (approximately BDT 1,525).
Traders say the exports will strengthen Bangladesh-India relations. However, local consumers in Bangladesh fear that this may push domestic Hilsa prices even higher.
