Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), has demanded strict punishment for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and others for crimes against humanity committed during the July–August movement.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday (September 18) after testifying before the International Crimes Tribunal, Nahid alleged that brutal repression, arbitrary shootings, and an internet shutdown were carried out to crush the student-led movement.
Earlier, the tribunal ordered the trial of Hasina, Kamal, and Mamun on five charges of crimes against humanity. The case dossier spans over 8,700 pages, including lists of martyrs and other documentary evidence, with 81 witnesses enlisted.
Nahid further claimed that Sheikh Hasina’s remark branding protesting students as “children of Razakars” gave legitimacy to attacks on them. He said many students and civilians were killed or injured as a result of state-sponsored violence.
