Dhaka: Junaid Saki, Chief Coordinator of the Ganashonghoti Andolon, has stated that the worsening law and order situation in the country is creating uncertainty regarding the upcoming election environment. He made this remark on Tuesday (2 September) after a meeting with the Chief Adviser.
The meeting began at 5:00 PM at the Chief Adviser’s official residence in Jamuna and was attended by representatives of seven political parties and Hefazat-e-Islam. The participating political parties included Nagorik Oikko, Ganashonghoti Andolon, AB Party, Ganadhikar Parishad, LDP, Islami Andolon Bangladesh, and Jatiyo Ganfront.
Junaid Saki said that during the meeting they raised two main issues with the Chief Adviser—election environment and judicial and institutional reform. He noted that the government has failed to restructure institutions, making the role of law enforcement agencies and other institutions questionable, which is creating political uncertainty in the election environment.
He further added that the participating parties suggested the formation of a committee to the Chief Adviser. This committee would coordinate with representatives of the National Unity Commission and the Election Commission to ensure a smooth election environment. Non-constitutional reform issues could be implemented by the government through ordinances, which would later be validated by Parliament.
Junaid Saki also stated that for constitutional issues where consensus among the parties is not reached, the decision will be left to the people. Therefore, it was proposed that the upcoming election be named the “Constitutional Reform Council Election,” which would allow approval of fundamental constitutional reforms while enabling the government to function as the National Parliament for five years.
