Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was assaulted by a young man at her official residence during a weekly public hearing. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when the assailant, disguised as a petitioner, gained entry under the pretext of submitting documents. According to reports from Indian media outlets like NDTV and PTI, the individual allegedly slapped the Chief Minister and pulled her hair. She was subsequently hospitalized for medical examination, though officials confirmed her injuries are not serious.
Security personnel present at the scene immediately apprehended the attacker and handed him over to the police for interrogation. While initial reports suggest he acted alone, a political motive has not been ruled out. BJP leader Harish Khurana strongly condemned the attack and called for an investigation into whether it was politically motivated. Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa also echoed suspicions of a potential conspiracy, promising a thorough probe to identify any masterminds behind the assault.
The incident has sparked a fierce political debate and raised serious questions about women’s safety in the capital. The opposition Congress party was quick to condemn the attack and used the opportunity to question the safety of ordinary women in Delhi if even the Chief Minister is not secure. In response to the breach, police have heightened security at the Chief Minister’s residence and are questioning all individuals who attended the public hearing that day.
