U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has suggested that both Russia and Ukraine may need to make territorial concessions to reach a peace agreement ending their ongoing conflict. In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday (August 19), Rubio acknowledged that while such compromises “may not seem fair,” they could be necessary to stop the war. His comments follow last week’s meeting between President Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, where Rubio was present.
Rubio clarified that the final border demarcations should be determined directly by Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky, with the U.S. playing only a mediating role. “We’ll facilitate communication, but the ultimate decisions lie with them,” he stated. The Secretary also emphasized ongoing U.S. efforts to build long-term security assurances for Ukraine, collaborating with both European and non-European allies to establish a multilateral safety framework post-agreement.
While outlining international support for Ukraine’s future security, Rubio noted Kyiv’s priority: “Ukrainian leaders have told us their strongest guarantee will be building a robust military.” Analysts suggest Rubio’s remarks may accelerate global discussions about potential diplomatic solutions to the crisis, though the path to compromise remains fraught with challenges. The proposal underscores Washington’s balancing act—advocating peace while recognizing Ukraine’s sovereignty concerns.
