Dhaka, August 18 — Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, has announced a 28-member full panel to contest the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. The panel includes Sadik Kayem as vice-presidential candidate (VP), who previously served as president of the DU unit and currently holds the position of central literature and publications secretary. SM Farhad, current president of the DU unit, will run for general secretary, while Mahiuddin Khan, the unit’s general secretary, will contest as assistant general secretary. Fatima Tasnim Juma from the Muktijuddho O Ganatantrik Andolan Inquilab Mancha has also joined the panel.
The details were disclosed at a press conference on Monday after submitting nomination papers to the Chief Returning Officer’s office. Chhatra Shibir’s central general secretary Nurul Islam Saddam stated, “We have tried to form a representative panel for students.” The panel includes Iqbal Haider as science and technology secretary, Khan Jasim (who recently lost an eye) as international affairs secretary, and Nurul Islam Sabbir as literature and cultural secretary.
Other notable candidates include Arman Hossein (sports secretary), Asif Abdullah (student transport secretary), Shariful Islam Muaz (social welfare secretary), and Sazzad Hossain Khan (research and publications secretary). The panel also features Majharul Islam (career development secretary), Abdullah Al Minhaj (health and environment secretary), and Sakhawat Zakaria (human rights and legal affairs secretary). Ummay Salma will contest for common room and cafeteria secretary.
The remaining 13 positions include leaders like Sarbamitra Chakma, Imran Hossain, Belal Hossain Apu, Jayen Uddin Sarkar Tonmoy, and Miftahul Hossain Al Maruf. Notably, the panel incorporates international relations student Majharul Islam Mujahid, specially-abled Raisul Islam, and female candidates Sabikun Nahar Tamanna and Afsana Akter from the student wing. Additional members include Shahriar Rahman, Abdullah Al Mahmud, Rayhan Uddin, and Anas bin Monir from Students Against Torture Platform.
Chhatra Shibir emphasized its commitment to a diverse and inclusive panel, aiming to address student issues comprehensively in the upcoming DUCSU polls.
