Continuous rainfall and upstream hill torrents have caused the water level of the Teesta River to rise 11 cm above the danger mark, submerging low-lying areas in five upazilas of Lalmonirhat district. Approximately 20,000 families have been left stranded as floodwaters inundated homes, roads, and croplands. At Dalia point, the water level reached 52.26 meters, surpassing the danger threshold of 52.15 meters.
The flood situation has worsened due to the obstruction of the river’s natural flow caused by the installation of solar panels in South Votmari, Kaliganj. Locals fear that if the embankment collapses, floodwaters could gush into Kaliganj town. Meanwhile, vast areas of Patgram, Hatibandha, and Aditmari upazilas remain submerged, disrupting daily life and leaving thousands without food, clean water, or shelter.
Affected residents, including Enamul Kabir and UP Chairman Moshiur Rahman, report severe hardships, with many families struggling to protect livestock and essential belongings. Executive Engineer Sunil Kumar of the Water Development Board assured that emergency measures are being taken. However, experts warn that if rains and upstream surges continue, the situation may escalate further, posing greater risks to vulnerable communities.
