Eminent educationist, essayist, and pioneering figure of leftist movements Professor Jatin Sarkar is no more. He passed away at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on Wednesday at 2:30 PM. He was 90 years old and had been suffering from age-related complications.
The matter was confirmed by Dr. Zakirul Islam, Deputy Director of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
He stated that due to kidney complications and other age-related ailments, Jatin Sarkar had been admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since August 8.
Born on August 18, 1936, in Kendua village of Netrokona, Jatin Sarkar was a former teacher of the Bengali Department at Nasirabad College in Mymensingh. Along with his intellectual literary pursuits, he was actively involved in progressive movements. He also served as the President of the Central Council of Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi.
For his contributions to literature, he received numerous accolades, including the Independence Award in 2010 and the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2007. Some of his notable works include Pakistaner Jonmo-Mrittu Darshan (The Birth and Death Philosophy of Pakistan), Sahityer Kache Pratyasha (Expectations from Literature), and Galpe Galpe Byakaran (Grammar Through Stories), written for children.
After retiring from teaching in 2002, he returned to his home district, Netrokona, and continued his literary work there.
His demise has been mourned by poets, writers, and people from various professions.
