Senior Jatiya Party leaders Anisul Islam Mahmud, ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader, and Mujibul Haque Chunnu jointly announced a national convention scheduled for Saturday at Gulshan’s Emmanuel Convention Center. The move comes after a July 31 High Court order temporarily restrained Chairman GM Quader from organizational activities, prompting Mahmud’s appointment as acting chairman.
Rebuilding Through Democracy
Chunnu described the convention as a “platform for organizational purification and democratic leadership restructuring.” Howlader criticized Quader, alleging his refusal of collective leadership caused party fragmentation. Mahmud revealed ongoing reconciliation efforts with factions led by Raushon Ershad and Anwar Hossain Manju, while proposing constitutional amendments to prevent unilateral committee changes by future chairpersons.
A History of Splits, A Promise of Unity
The party has fractured multiple times since 1990, most recently in April 2024 when Raushon Ershad formed a breakaway faction. Mahmud termed Quader’s failure to appeal the court order as “curious,” asserting the convention aims to reunite all factions under the original “Plough symbol” registration. Election Commission observers have been invited to legitimize what Mahmud called “the people’s expected revival” of the party founded by Hussein Muhammad Ershad.
