Plea to keep Akhtaruzzaman in jail after remand

  • Police have requested that Jamaat leader and former member of parliament, freedom fighter Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman, be detained in jail until the investigation is completed in a case filed against him for obstructing government work and misbehaving with officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

    The petition was filed after he was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Court after being remanded for one day on Sunday (October 4). Earlier, the court had granted Akhtaruzzaman a one-day remand in the same case on Saturday.

    The investigation officer of the case, Airport Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Majedul Islam, requested that he be detained in jail. The hearing on this application is underway in the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam. Meanwhile, Akhtaruzzaman’s lawyers have applied for bail on his behalf and are present in the court.

    According to the case report, Akhtaruzzaman had an argument with the airport’s executive director, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, on October 1, amid a situation that arose over a luggage and trolley shortage at the airport. He was also accused of threatening him during that time.

    Apart from this, there are allegations of misbehavior and physical assault against a security guard for preventing him from recording videos in a reserved area of ​​the airport. In the same incident, there are also allegations of throwing a Zamzam water bottle and assaulting a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

    Earlier, on Friday (October 2), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) arrested Akhtaruzzaman from his house in the capital’s Cantonment area. He was later shown arrested in the case filed at the Airport Police Station.
