Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that young innovators will build the future of the country. The government will provide all-round support to young people interested in research, technological innovation and building technology-based startups.
He made this statement while meeting members of the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) team, which won the world championship in the international ‘Met ROV International Underwater Robot Competition 2026’, at the Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday (August 2).
Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Md. Sujauddaula said that the Prime Minister congratulated the winning students and said that such innovations will take Bangladesh’s technological capabilities to new heights. She assured the government’s full support in their research, technology development and innovative initiatives.
During the meeting, MIST students showcased their world-winning underwater robot to the Prime Minister. He inquired about the robot’s technical capabilities, design, and potential uses. At the same time, he promised the necessary government support for the robot’s further development, commercialization, and participation in future international competitions.
The Prime Minister said that necessary support will be provided through the government’s startup program for young people interested in building technology-based startups.
He further said that the government is working to build a diversified export-oriented economy by strengthening the semiconductor, pharmaceuticals, furniture and cosmetics sectors in addition to the ready-made garment industry. Particular emphasis is being given to attracting domestic and foreign investment and creating skilled manpower in the semiconductor industry. He also called on Bangladeshi experts working abroad to return home and contribute to the development of this sector.
It is worth noting that MIST’s ‘Mist Mavirov’ team won the championship out of 88 teams from 18 countries at the ‘Met ROV International Underwater Robot Competition 2026’ held in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, from June 23-29. The United States came in second and Canada came in third.
