Leader of the opposition in the parliament and the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said the purpose of the July movement was not to remove one party from power and put another party in power; its aim was to change the state system and implement the aspirations of the people.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a view-exchange meeting with the family members of the deceased and injured in the July movement at Kakrail in the capital on Thursday (July 30th).
He alleged that instead of the expected reforms after the movement, politicization has increased in various public and private institutions and those involved in the incompetent and corruption are being placed in important positions by excluding qualified people.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said Jamaat-e-Islami did not compromise during the movement. He claimed that the politics of the movement did not negotiate with the autocratic government in the day and did not step back from the position despite various pressures, intimidation and temptation.
He added that since the beginning of the movement, Jamaat has morally supported the students and has not claimed credit even after the movement was successful. He said the party leaders were instructed to stand by the martyred families and the injured instead of going to the polls.
Referring to the martyred family, he said their dream was to establish a just state. If that goal is not achieved, the martyrs will have to answer to their families. At the same time, he said, the killers of the innocent people killed in the July movement will also be brought to justice.
Calling on the government, Jamaat-e-Amir said the promises made with the people must be fulfilled and move forward in a transparent and fair manner instead of political strategy.
He added that Jamaat will not bow down to any pressure or intimidation and will continue to stand against injustice. He said the parliament will play a role in the role of the martyred families and the voices of the injured.
