Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Bhadra, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and other senior leaders of the opposition alliance have been detained while protesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi.
On Tuesday (July 21st), the leaders of the opposition alliance held a march and sit-in programme at the prime minister’s residence demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. During the protest, the Delhi Police arrested them and removed them from the spot.
On the other hand, the movement did not stop even after the march towards the parliament. Hundreds of students and supporters gathered in the capital’s Jantar Mantar on Tuesday. The protesters claimed that the police’s strict stance and use of force could not suppress their movements; rather, they were more determined to meet their demands.
The opposition parties accuse the government of suppressing the voice of the opposition by blocking peaceful democratic programmes. However, there was no immediate response from the Delhi Police or the central government.
