The first day of the monsoon session of Parliament in the Indian capital Delhi has created a tense situation in the wake of the ‘Karoch Janata Party’ protest. The police tried to block the building.
Later, the protesters clashed with law enforcement and tensions.
On Monday (July 20th), police stopped the procession from Jantar Mantar area for the parliament building. The protesters alleged that police used lathicharge and tear gas to disperse them. Additional police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed to control the situation.
Images and videos circulating on social media showed many protesters sitting on the streets in the face of police obstruction. Some were also reported to have been arrested.
The protesters also claimed that internet services have been temporarily suspended in the area adjacent to the parliament building and mobile and internet connections have been disrupted due to the use of signal jammers. However, these claims could not be independently verified and the authorities did not immediately receive any formal statement in this regard.
Earlier, the Delhi Police had said that no procession was allowed towards the parliament building. However, a large number of supporters gathered in the Jantar Mantar area from the morning. Later, when they tried to move towards parliament, the police interrupted and tensions erupted in the entire area.
