Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the authorities concerned to remove all types of vehicles, including fitness-free, expired and environmentally polluting buses, trucks, from the streets of the capital.
At the same time, he directed to introduce automatic traffic light system at least fifty important intersections in Dhaka as soon as possible.
The prime minister gave the directives at a meeting on environmental pollution held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday (July 18, 2022). The meeting discussed in detail the immediate and long-term measures to reduce air and noise pollution in the capital.
At the meeting, it was decided to take strict measures to prevent air pollution caused by brick kilns. The prime minister stressed the need to increase the production of bricks through environmentally friendly alternative technologies and directed the concerned agencies to take effective steps quickly.
Law enforcement agencies have also been asked to be stricter in controlling noise pollution caused by excessive horn use in the capital. At the same time, the possibility of using artificial intelligence-based technology in the control of horns like AI cameras used in traffic management was also discussed.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintu, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam, State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Dr. Saimum Parvez, Dhaka South and North City Corporation administrator, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner and senior officials of the concerned ministries and agencies were present.
