The government has appointed human rights activist Irene Khan as the permanent representative and ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Nations. He was also given the rank of Minister.
The Cabinet Division issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday (July 8th). During his tenure, he will enjoy the status of state minister, salary and allowances and other government facilities related to it.
Irene Khan is a well-known human rights figure in the international arena. He served as the Secretary General of Amnesty International from 2001 to 2009. She is the first female secretary general in the history of the organization.
He later served as the Director General of the International Development League Organization from 2012 to 2019 and played an important role in establishing international development and the rule of law.
Since August 1, 2020, Irene Khan has been serving as the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Community and Protection of the United Nations. She was the first woman to take office since the post was introduced in 1993.
He will be responsible for highlighting Bangladesh’s diplomatic interests, international relations and the country’s position on various global issues at the United Nations.
