Leader of the Opposition and the Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said a ‘shadow cabinet’ of the party is ready and it will be officially released in due course. He said that even though such a system is not constitutional recognition, there is a shadow cabinet in many democratic countries of the world.
He said this while reacting to the budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhavan on Wednesday.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said Jamaat wants to play a responsible role as an opposition party. In his words, Parliament needs to become an effective dialogue not only a place of formal debate, but also a platform for effective discussion on the problems of the people and its realistic solutions.
He alleged that the government has created a crisis in national politics due to the lack of demand for the referendum. He claimed that Jamaat and BNP were in favour of the referendum. However, there was a difference in the position of the two parties in the decision of the reform council. He said even though Jamaat took oath in accordance with the rules, the BNP did not take oath in the constitution to mention the system.
Criticizing the BNP’s stance, he said the current government was also formed outside the existing framework of the constitution, while BNP is now in power by taking part in the election under that government.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also claimed that a large number of voters in the referendum voted in favour of reform. He alleged that the issue was discussed in parliament but did not give enough time as an opposition party. He said the opposition is being discriminated against in parliament instead of implementing the spirit of the anti-discrimination movement.
He said that the reforms that the people have given to the people should not be limited to the amendments. He also alleged that the ruling party had cancelled several ordinances by the force of majority. However, he expressed hope that the ongoing political dialogue would be implemented through dialogue that a healthy political trend would be established in the country if acceptable reforms were implemented through dialogue. Otherwise, there is a possibility of a new crisis in the future.
